about

Is it almost time to Deck the Halls? Well not quite yet… but Chicago’s Susie Blue & the Lonesome Fellas is hanging the mistletoe early this year and releasing a 6 song digital collection of studio and live recordings featuring playing and solos by the Lonesome Fellas and some pretty amazing special guests including Grammy winning Harmonica maestro Howard Levy, Fiddler Shane Guse from the Western Swing Authority, and , who croons and duets with Susie on “Silent Night” from a live recording in Chicago.

Since their recent release BLUE TRAIN this past summer the band has been enjoying a lot of airplay, crossing over blues, jazz and roots radio, while still riding the RMR charts. Their holiday collection is just as fun, but with a very cool yuletide which will keep your toes tapping with carnivalesque arrangements like “Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me” which features a bluesy sax solo by Eric Schneider, grooving guitar by Neal Alger and a vocal by Santa Claus himself!

Susie’s smooth and bright voice also shines in “Happy New Year Baby” which is an early 60’s pop tune revamped in rollicking Lonesome Fellas style with Eric Schneider stealing the show with his sax vamps and Alger’s guitar tearing it up for a proper New Years Eve throw down. Then to stoke your holiday nostalgia, there is a very beautiful and soothing duet between Susie and guitarist Paulinho Garcia which was recorded live in performance in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase. The collection would not be complete without BLUE CHRISTMAS, because it’s Susie BLUE, right? Here the band brings in Western Swing Authorities Shane Guse who plays a frisky fiddle solo and Grammy winner TC Furlong from the Jump in the Saddle band for down home pedal steel. Miles and Levy top off the collection with a somber and bluesy arrangement of “Auld Lang Syne” with just Levy playing piano and Harmonica while Miles sings with echoes of Billie Holiday, which she is well known for since DownBeat Magazine pegged her as having “a lively vocal style that brings to mind a winning blend of Patsy Cline and Billie Holiday. “

Only 6 songs, but a lot of fun, thrills and chills packed into this collection. It is certainly not your average Holiday fare and the up tempo tunes will keep your toes tapping while the 2 ballads will keep you appropriately wistful and yearning for the holidays. – JM Reid, Chicago Music Guide
